About Geoffrey Mawby

Geoffrey Mawby was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania and raised in various northeastern states, mostly in New Jersey. He lived and worked in New York City for nearly forty years where he enjoyed a career in book publishing, teaching and art.

He states that he was drawn or sketched ever since he can remember. As a youngster his grandmother, Isabella Keyser, who was a fairly well-known painter in her day, encouraged him to draw. That was the beginning of art as being a part of his life, which is true to this day.

His first formal training in drawing and composition was at the Brooklyn Museum of Art School which he attended thanks to the G.I. Bill after serving the Marines in World War II. Schooling was interrupted for a couple of years as he was recalled to serve in the Korean conflict.

When he returned from duty he attended the Art Students League of New York to again study drawing, composition, layout and design. While there he became involved and was made a member of the society and was elected to its Board of Directors. For almost forty years he served in all capacities, including the office of President. He was recently invited back to serve on the Board in 2004-2005.

For many years his art was "New York City" related. He sketched, drew, painted and did graphics of the city. In 1966 he became associated with Gallery 84, one of the original 10th Street Galleries, where over the next twenty years he had eight one-man shows. He also enjoyed entertaining, being selected for and winning awards (including three Best In Show) in many open juried competitions.

When he moved to Cape Cod some years ago he became intrigued by the light and atmosphere of the Cape. The term "landscape" took a whole new meaning. "The sky, the clouds, sunsets, beaches made me want to paint these new views - at least new to me. I built a studio so I could work year round, to try my hand at scenes I had never done before. I also did still lifes, tried pastels, did box construction and most recently collages."

For many years he has exhibited at two well known galleries: the Chatham Art Gallery on Cape Cod and at Summit Frame and Art in Summit, New Jersey. "As a realist, in my works, my aim has always been to present my impressions, my feelings, pleasure and the beauty I see, in the most responsive way possible."
